Comminges Festival

The Comminges area stretches along the Pyrenees in the Gascony region between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

Saint-Bertrand de Comminges is the area's capital and also the highest "City of Art and History" in the Central Pyrenees area.

The Romans occupied this site long before our time. Comminges is now a quiet, mediaeval-style city, but was once extremely prosperous. A hundred thousand inhabitants lived there under Pompey and it was an important cathedral city during the Middle Ages.

Artists are welcomed to the Comminges Festival by two sanctuaries which bear witness to the different civilisations that once inhabited the town: the Romanesque basilica of Saint Just Valcabrère, built in the eleventh century, is based on the ancient ruins of the Roman temples, between a vast archaeological site, and the Saint-Bertrand de Comminges Cathedral, famous for its stalls and huge Renaissance organ.

The Comminges Festival ranks among the top French festivals and in its concern for quality sets itself three main objectives: to give preference to French musicians and performers, to regularly commission compositions so that their initial performance is at the festival and to include young performers alongside dedicated artists.
