The Three Settings for the Festival

The Abbey at Lessay was founded in 1056 by the Barons of La Haye-du -Puits, Richard Turstin Haldup, (or Haloup), and his son, Eudes Au Capel. The romanesque abbey of Saint Trinity is constructed in a traditional style, known as Benedictine, in the form of a Latin cross facing east. The vast nave is flanked by side aisles, with a large transept, and the choir consists of two bays bordered by aisles, beyond which there is a deep semi-circular apse behind the altar. The original Norman building was entirely vaulted by crossed pointed arches. The church, like the adjoining monastery, was destroyed in 1944;  it has been magnificently restored, as you see it today.

The church of Canville is thought to date from the 15th century. The chapel contains frescoes illustrating the compostella legend of ‘Pendu Dependu’.   This is celebrated throughout medieval Europe, appearing in paintings wherever there are dedications to St. James.

The Manoir de Gonfreville was constructed in the 15th century:  Entry is through a gateway that comprises one entrance for vehicles and one for those on foot. The ancient barn, now used as a concert hall, is situated in the courtyard. Carpentry in the old style shows how craftsmen made use of the deformations in tree trunks, turning them into rafters and using them as decorations.
