La vie du festival
The Festival of Les Heures Musicales in the Abbey at Lessay was established in 1994, and now has its place as part of the musical heritage of the Departement of
This festival brings together both French and foreign musiciens, combining diverse sacred and profane music for a loyal audience which grows in number each year. Lessay’s speciality has, above all, been baroque music, which has been presented in a great variety of interpretations.
Amongst the many recordings taking advantage of the superb acoustics of the Abbey is that of Mozart’s Mass in C Minor performed by Les Arts Florissants and directed by William Christie.
Contemporary music is also part of the programme each year. New works have been specially written for Lessay, amongst them The Three Wise Kings by Marcel Landowsky, performed in the presence of the composer in 1993, and Concerto for Two Pianos and String Orchestra by Nicholas Bacri….
The organ was constructed by the studio of Jean-Francois Dupont and inaugurated in July 1994, and has been performed on by many famous organists.
